Technical Manager, HVAC Systems

Under the oversight of the Director-Tech Ops and Underwater Systems the Technical Manager, HVAC Systems is responsible for the implementation of HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) & Refrigeration energy efficiency programs for the Disney Cruise Line fleet and Island Destinations. This role will focus on optimizing operations, reducing associated emissions, and contributing to compliance with Company, International Maritime Organization, and European Regulations in regards to Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions and greater fuel efficiency.
Responsibilities:
- Evaluate and implement new technology to improve onboard AC and refrigeration systems efficiency while maintaining guest comfort.
- Responsible for implementing and maintaining highly specialized programs focused on energy efficiency which are critical MTO HVAC-Refrigeration functions.
- Responsible for maintaining HVAC & Refrigeration budgets inclusive of forecasting and ongoing updates to budgets & budgetary needs.
- Mentor training programs within the fleet and islands teams relating to HVAC and
Refrigeration. - Ensure all required Classification Society/USCG approvals are in place for planned
work. - Manage Continuous Improvement Reports (CIR) pertaining to issues within areas of
responsibility. - Maintain & update shore-based library of completed and planned HVAC & Refrigeration works relative to each vessel in the fleet.
- Responsible for implementation of the general safety management responsibilities specified in SMS.
- Participate in selection of and management of vendors servicing air conditioning and refrigeration systems.
- Assist shipboard teams in the preparation and execution of dry-dock specifications in their respective area of responsibility.
- Assist recruiting qualified HVAC Cast & Crew Members.
- Continuously monitor the energy efficient utilization of shipboard ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems.
- Assist onboard teams for preventative leak maintenance and detection.
Basic Qualifications:
- Minimum 5 + years of industry experience in refrigeration and air
conditioning systems, maintenance and installation. With focus on HVAC-R related analysis, diagnosis, retrofits, managerial planning and executions. - EPA Universal Certification
- Experience managing high‑value engineering projects, including change management processes.
- Familiar with emerging technologies in the HVAC market both in practice and installation.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively and build strong relationships across diverse, inclusive teams and with internal and external stakeholders
- Ability to lift a minimum of 25 lbs., capable of walking long distances, ability to navigate stairs.
- Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills, including experience preparing and delivering weekly/monthly operational reports.
- Experience with dry dock, wet dock, and in service project requests.
- Proven computer proficiency and ability to learn new systems/software as needed.
- Ability to work effectively in fast‑paced, varied, and sometimes confined environments, including exposure to extreme temperature conditions.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, and applicable regulations, including demonstrated knowledge of IMO, MARPOL, and U.S. EPA refrigerant requirements.
- Ability to work nights/weekends and travel domestic and internationally as required.
Preferred qualifications:
- 5+ Maritime / Cruise industry experience in shipboard refrigeration and air conditioning systems maintenance and installation with focus on HVAC-R analysis, diagnosis, retrofits, managerial planning and executions.
- Experience with related equipment manufacturers handling and maintenance training.
- Previous leadership experience within Engineering or HVAC-R
- Experience within dry docks and or new builds
- Knowledge of AMOS computer-based maintenance systems
Education:
- HVAC-R Trade School, HVAC-R Trainings/Certifications, or relevant work experience
The hiring range for this position in Celebration, FL is $110,000 to 147,500 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
