"I didn't think it was possible that something I did for fun - telling sports stories through stats - could become my job until I came here."
Ana, Sr. Researcher, ESPN
Job Summary:
National Geographic is looking for a Visual Editor to join the Interactive Storytelling team. This role will work across the National Geographic’s verticals to pitch, edit and execute visual narratives and interactive formats, including long-form storytelling, immersive maps, games, 3D visualizations, and emerging storytelling forms. The Visual Editor collaborate with our award-winning team of developers, designers, cartographers, illustrators and photographers. This role requires a team player and creative thinker with a deep understanding of what is technically possible to drive greater user engagement with our digital experiences.
What You Will Do
- Identify and pitch visual story ideas and execute them in partnership with digital editors, developers and graphics editors.
- Partner with the Design, Cartography, Graphics, Video and Photography teams to refine standards and best practices for storytelling forms including data visualizations, games, long-form visual narratives, photo features, and other interactive experiences.
- Apply audience analytics to inform design choices and support the user journey across Nat Geo content, on- and off-platform.
- Serve as user-experience advocate across the Creative Department, coaching print-focused designers and graphic artists on how to best translate graphics to a digital context
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Minimum 6 years of experience conceptualizing and creating interactive storytelling on digital platforms.
- You have solid visual storytelling and data journalism experience gained within a newsroom or editorial setting.
- You have a portfolio of published work that demonstrates your skills in research, reporting, story development and execution of a visual storytelling concept.
- You understand the needs of a digital audience, user experience design, and are always asking: “how will I engage the audience”?
- You’re comfortable working collaboratively, individually and with cross-functional teams. We are seeking a self-starter, but not a lone wolf.
- You are an excellent communicator and feel as comfortable walking through a visual pitch with editors as you do coaching a graphics editor on wireframing an interactive design.
Preferred Qualifications
- We’re flexible on your exact skillset as long as you bring curiosity and willingness to learn. But you will ideally have some combination of editing experience, art direction, product design, user experience and prototyping skills (Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, etc.), mapping and graphics skills (Illustrator, AI2html, QGIS), and development and visualization skills (HTML, CSS, Javascript and JQuery, d3, three.js or other visualization libraries).
- Familiarity with UX research and testing methodologies, and prototyping software.
Education
Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
