Segment Producer
Job Summary:
The ABC News New York Bureau serves as the New York hub, leading breaking news coverage, enterprise reporting, and editorial coordination across the Eastern United States. The bureau plays a critical role in identifying, developing, and executing coverage of major national stories while partnering closely with network broadcasts, digital platforms, News Services, Audio, and Owned Television Stations.
The bureau oversees day-to-day newsgathering operations, manages field coverage, and deploys resources to support ABC News' editorial priorities—working in close partnership with the broader Global Newsgathering organization.
The Segment Producer supports New York Bureau by gathering, producing, coordinating, and distributing content across broadcast, digital, streaming, audio, and affiliate platforms. Working in a fast-paced 24/7 news environment, this role plays a critical part in breaking news coverage and daily newsgathering operations, ensuring timely and accurate delivery of content to internal stakeholders, affiliates, and external partners.
The Segment Producer monitors developing news events, video feeds, scanner traffic, and social media platforms to identify and advance coverage opportunities. They coordinate closely with assignment editors, correspondents, producers, affiliates, and operations teams to support live coverage, facilitate content sharing, verify and process video assets, and ensure seamless distribution of material across ABC News programs and platforms.
This role requires strong editorial judgment, exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines. The ideal candidate thrives in a collaborative news environment, demonstrates sound news judgment, and is passionate about delivering accurate, compelling journalism to audiences across all platforms.
Responsibilities:
- Editing, organizing, and distributing video to affiliates, owned stations, and platforms.
- Communicate with ABC News platforms, News Services clients, and owned and affiliated stations, Via teams, Phone and Email.
- Monitor, listen to, and log scanner traffic for breaking development
- Clear user generated social media content
- Basic understanding of usage clearance for network broadcasts, affiliates, and clients.
- Log, transcribe, and process video, ensuring timely distribution across all ABC News platforms.
- Coordinate with affiliates to identify coverage and route feeds to New York.
- Produce basic live shots from indoor locations, including custom tapings in FlexIS and sixth‑floor camera locations for MPR.
- Shoot elements using an iPhone.
- Send pre‑emption emails to News Services clients.
- Create national, political, social, and file cuts including APTN and Reuters material to NewsOneNet.
- Create and distribute promo lines for World News Tonight, Good Morning America, Nightline, and generic affiliate promos.
- Send Nightline and 20/20 scripts to clients via Mailchimp.
- Gather elements for segments such as Showbiz and Medical Minute and deliver them to Interplay for editing.
Basic Qualifications:
- Minimum of two years of experience in a news, broadcast, digital media, or newsroom environment.
- Experience supporting breaking news coverage in a fast-paced, deadline-driven setting.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt quickly to changing news situations.
- Experience coordinating content across multiple platforms, including broadcast, digital, streaming, and affiliate distribution.
- Familiarity with video production workflows, content management systems, and newsroom operations.

- Strong news judgment and editorial decision-making skills.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to collaborate across multiple teams, including correspondents, producers, assignment editors, operations teams, and affiliates.
- Proficiency in video logging, content processing, and media asset management.
- Knowledge of social media monitoring and user-generated content verification.
- Ability to troubleshoot issues and proactively identify solutions in a live news environment.
- Strong computer and digital platform proficiency.
- Must have flexibility and ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours during major news events.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience producing live shots and remote broadcasts.
- Familiarity with broadcast newsroom systems, video editing platforms, and content distribution tools.
- Knowledge of copyright, content clearance, and usage rights for broadcast and digital media.
- Experience working with affiliate stations and external news partners.
- Bilingual language skills are a plus.
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Broadcasting, Media Studies, or a related field; or equivalent professional experience.
- Relevant newsroom, broadcast, digital media, or production experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
The hiring range for this position in New York, NY is $83,200 to $111,500 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
