Creating a Culture of Safety: Meet Krista

There are many actions taken behind the scenes to provide a magical experience at Walt Disney World Resort. One is the commitment to care thanks to our Safety team. By partnering and interacting with various departments throughout the property, they help coordinate a safe environment for cast, guests and animals.

Here’s what Krista—Safety Team Leader at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park—told us about her career journey and how she ensures a safe environment at Disney!

Tell us about yourself! What is your career in Safety like at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park?

I lead, mentor, and develop an awesome team of safety professionals. Together, we support cast safety and health efforts, including food and animal safety in a theme park environment.

How long have you been working with Disney, and what has your journey been like so far?

I have been with Disney for 17 years, in safety and health support roles. I’ve supported a diverse range of operations including resorts, theme parks, water parks, mini golf, sports, runDisney, and retail operations at Disney Springs and the liquidation outlets.

What inspires you in your role?

Leading by example when it comes to safety! Not just because safety is my role but because it's the right thing to do. I've had the opportunity to support many operational areas, and I've met a lot of great leaders and cast along the way.

How does your work in Global Safety impact the company?

It all starts with creating a solid culture of safety. I think there is no greater achievement as a safety professional than helping people care about safety as much as I do. Our Safety teams are composed of experts from a broad range of disciplines and occupations that interface and partner with multiple groups. We provide safety guidance, direction, and support by influencing and engaging leaders and cast to help drive ownership of safety and health.

How have you participated in mentorship opportunities at Disney?

I was a mentor for the Disney on the Yard mentorship program. Disney has partnered with Historically Black Colleges and Universities across the country, and as a proud second-generation HBCU alumna of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, it’s important to me that the next generation of HBCU students uses mentorship as a support system to empower them to understand the value and influence the connections bring for growth and opportunity.
